Daily Crapbook: Equisite Pain
I tweaked my back a few days ago because of an errant moment of confidence. So now it hurts to sit and lie down- the only comfortable position is standing with locked knees, leaning forward at a slight angle. I've learned an important lesson- never ever try anything physical or else you will fail miserably and hurt yourself. (But its not that bad really- my Mom says with proper stretching, I'll be back to my sedentary slobby self in a week.)

Daily Crapbook: Hipster Fennec
Its just one of those days where I want to keep drawing until I get something good going- even if it means I'll be late for a party.

Favorite Cartoons #3: Maya The Bee
The next cartoon I recall watching a great deal was "Maya The Bee." I don't really remember loving it, but that theme song is still in my head after all these years. I hear its getting a reboot, hopefully its good!

Favorite Cartoons #2: David The Gnome
The next cartoon I remember loving was also a Nick Jr show that had a magical tone: David the Gnome, starring Mr. Cunningham himself. Tom Bosley might very well be the first voice I ever recognized. While I loved this show's premise, I did tend to find the episodes a little boring. The character that really kept me watching was Swift the Fox. The (relatively) giant, stalwart animal friend that doubles as a mount is a trope I'm always a fan of, and I think Swift was the first exposure I had to that idea. As I kid I thought he was just beautiful. I don't think he even talked- did he? Did the other animals talk? I'm afraid to go back and watch the show because I have a feeling it was actually really horrible, and I'd prefer to keep my fond memories of it untainted by criticism.
Favorite Cartoons #1: Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics
Someone recently asked me what I thought were the best and worst cartoons of all time. I started to pick through my brain to compile a list, one memory leading to another, and after a few minutes I realized there were tons of cartoons that as I child I had cherished but as an adult I hadn't thought about in years. They all must have informed my current tastes, even a little. So instead of just making a boring old list, why not drag out my answer for weeks and perhaps months and pay tribute to my old favorites by doing a fanart for each one? Starting from my earliest memories of obscure Japanese imports onward. Why the heck not?
The first show was one I only have the dimmest memories of, and I had to look up the name. But I do remember I loved it: "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics" on Nick Jr. Before pre-school shows became all about vacuous characters shrieking out through the fourth wall demanding tedious audience participation, shows could be quiet, gentle, and magical. That is how I remember this show. It was a simple show that told fairy tales, and I just loved looking at it even when I didn't quite understand what was going on (fairy tales, after all, don't make much sense). And the fairy tales weren't just Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin, but very obscure stories as well, the kind of fairy tales I still love. And one of the most vivid memories I have as a kid was watching that Girl in the Red Dress joyfully flying through the trees in the opening credits. I don't remember if the Girl was ever featured in an episode, and I never knew who she was supposed to be, but I just loved her. "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics" a show I think I'd like to revisit.

Daily Crapbook: Ivan the Woodcutter
Ivan is a character I've been noodling around in my head for a long time. Every so often I doodle him some more to see how he's doing.

Daily Crapbook: New Year's Cycle
Every year around this time, I sketch out all of my resolutions in a flourish of sunny optimism, and they are usually the resolutions I didn't complete the previous year. This year, I'm skipping that ritual because the doldrums have come upon me earlier than usual.
