Another Spot From A While Back

I had today off, but rather than putting pencil to paper I ended up just kicking back and watching the birds act strangely (seriously, the birds were acting very weird today). So here's a spot I did with Awesome Inc. a while back for Cartoon Network Latin America. I've animated Billy and Mandy before, but never in Flash. This was a simple spot, so it was a good one to learn on.

Daily Crapbook

I've been busy this week, so not a lot of time to do my daily crapbook or Monkey Rag. I'm getting anxious to get back on the ball!

Daily Crapbook: What A Way To Go

Now that I've watched it again, I think its for certain: "What A Way To Go" is my absolute favorite movie of all time. It's one of those everything-and-the-kitchen-sink type comedies from the sixties, and its is just perfect. Apart from an awesome cast (Dick Van Dyke, Dean Martin, Paul Newman, and Gene Kelley in the same movie!), an irresistible performance by Shirley MacClaine, and amazing costumes by Edith Head, what really makes this movie stand apart is the screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Its an episodic narrative about a woman who wants "the simple life", but has a knack for marrying poor men who stumble into fortunes and die in bizarre ways. Its such a tight, engaging, perfectly structured story; this is one of those old movies I think people would love even if they think they hate old movies.

I want to try and sketch out a "poster" for this film over this week.

Monkey Rag Shot List

Its tedious work, but I finally sat down and made up a shot list for "Monkey Rag". I came up with the template based on two criteria:

a) To organize and segment the production into clearly defined chunks, so that I can at a glance understand my progress visually.

b) To provide as many opportunities as possible for me to check things off so I feel productive. (Seriously. So much of this process is mental.)

This shot list is more detailed that the one I made for "Juxtaposer" and it took all bloody day to make it. As I progress, I'll be posting the shot list periodically so everyone can berate me for not animating faster. (Again, seriously. Having people interested in the project has been a huge motivation. Its like the old adage: "if a Jo draws in the woods and no one sees, does she really make a cartoon?")

Daily Crapbook: Mr. Peabody's Mermaid

There was a movie I caught on TCM a long time ago that I haven't seen since called Mr. Peabody's Mermaid. (Well, actually its called Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, but ever since I saw it I've erroneously remembered it as Mr. Peabody's Mermaid and I can't shake the habit.) Its a quiet, sweet little fantasy about a quiet, sweet little man (William Powell) who goes fishing and captures chickadee of the sea Ann Blyth, and she subsequently helps him get through his mid-life crisis. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Even though its been years since I've seen it, I've always wanted to make a drawing for it. I'll try and finish this illustration during this week.
