Sketch Dailies: Kermit

Had to take a break for a quick Sketch Dailies of Kermit.  Such a great straight man for all the Muppet craziness, but he had the best "YAAAAY!" of them all.

Sketch Dailies: Rollergirl

Haven't been drawing much on my own lately, but now that the booth is done I need to get back in the habit.  Here's a revisiting of an old sketch appropriate for #Sketch_Dailies.

Exhibiting at CTN Expo Next Week

I finally finished putting together my booth, complete with merch, signage, and decorations.  Now that I've got it all working, I need to cram it into a suitcase and make sure it will all fit.  But the hard part is done!  If you're in Burbank next week for the expo, make sure you come by and say hi!

Foster House Productions Acquires New Intern in March 2015

For the past few months, I haven't been very productive with my daily sketchings and artings and whatnots due to my being utterly kerplooped all the time.  I'm happy to officially announce the reason why. :)

2014 Character Animation Reel

Here is my demo reel updated with work from the past year.  The overall reel is still much the same, but I got a chance to get rid of some old stuff and tighten up some old editing that was bugging me all last year, so I consider it an improvement however small.  It's still amazing to me that such small changes still take me days to do, and I remember that I went several years without updating my reel at all because it was such a bother.  But its gotta be done!  Now to update my website...bleah, another chore...

"Identity Theft" for Primerica

I did a few perfunctory corporate whiteboard animations last year, but I kind of liked this one.  The material was very dry, so I did what I could to make it fun- in this case it meant adding a raccoon.  If my identity ever get stolen, I hope its by a raccoon wearing a beret.  The more videos I did, the more I relied on cut-outs to do interesting stuff rather than the normal straight-ahead drawing, and I think its ended up looking better as well as providing some consistency between takes.

Spanko's Dark Smile, New Shirt Design

When I was trying to make the first "Monkey Rag" trailer, I did this little animation of Spanko's face melting:

Nate thought it was just a tad too disturbing to use in the trailer, so I abandoned it.  But then this month I got to thinking about creepy things and I remember ited, and wondered if it would make a cool lookin' shirt.  check it out on my shop!

Sketch Dailies: Bride of Frankenstein

Small #Sketch Dailies sketchling of the Bride of Frankenstein, with a drink in her hand for some reason.  I made it a beaker at first but you can't do a convincing brandy swirl with a beaker.  Also, #inktober is bearing down on my head.  Halfway through the month and I'm still flattened by this challenge.

Daily Crapbook: Papers Everywhere

Along the same lines of the new front cover for my art book, I revisited the old idea and drew it again.  At least the sentiment is still fresh.

Sketch Dailies: Wednesday Addams

This started out as a drawing I liked, and then I had to go and ink it.  Thanks a lot #Inktober for making me work way outside my comfort zone, she said in a sarcastic tone but actually really meant it.

Daily Crapbook: Vampire Lady

It’s been forever since I tried using ink.  Then I remembered that’s because its hard and I’m not good at it.  I redid an old Halloweeny sketch I never finished as the subject of my first jaunt back into this sordid experiment.  Thanks #inktober for making me practice!

Daily Crapbook: New Sketchbook Cover

New cover art for my latest Sketchbook which I plan to sell at CTN.  I realize that printing takes time, so these past few days I've been rushing to design it.  Every time I make a new one of these it's always in a rush, so I never really spend time experimenting.  I just try to polish my previous ideas and hope they'll hold up.  I just spent these past few days agonizing over the layout and despairing over my lack of artistic improvement since last year, but its done and the proof is ordered.  I may hate what I do the second I finish it, but once its finished I can at least move on to something else.  Speaking of which, time for new business cards!

"Monkey Rag" Shop Is Open For Business!

I've added a couple more designs just to round things out a little, and that means more options for you!  If "Monkey Rag" make you laugh, smile, smirk, or simply make you cock your head to one side and ponder the meaning of life, please consider stopping by the shop and throwing down some support.

"Monkey Rag" Merch!

I'm trying to come up with things I can sell at my table for CTN, so I thought I'd stick my toe in the water with an online shop at RedBubble.  It would be great if I could start selling enough to help fund all the ordering and printing I need to do, but we'll see!  I only have the one design up there now, but I plan to do a few more soon.  Stay tuned!

Monkey Rag Stickers!

Since it will be my first time ever having a table anywhere, I want to stock it up right.  That means lots of goodies that people can snag for a couple bucks.  First off to the printers are some die-cut vinyl stickers!  I'm excited about these- I think they're going to turn out good.  Still working on one more sticker design.

Sketch Dailies: Mary Poppins Casting

A few days late for this Sketch Dailies topic, but I've had this in the back of my mind for a while now.  When I learned that there were other actresses considered for the role of Mary Poppins before practically-perfect-in-every-way Julie Andrews, I wondered what they might have been like.  I think Mary Martin in the late fifties/early sixties would relish another flying role, and wouldn't even have to pretend to be a little boy!  Angela Lansbury at that time could still be a bit of a glamorpuss and would be really beautiful in that setting.  Bette Davis made a super-creepy movie called "The Nanny" and thus would make a great Scary Mary.  Of course, "Mary Poppins" is one of my all-time favorite movies and I wouldn't change a frame of it, but its still fun to speculate.

"Animator Paper Doll" for CTN Expo

I've been MIA lately because there are a couple things going on in my life that have just taken over.  I haven't had much time to do anything but work, but I had to meet this deadline tonight for the CTN Expo sketchbook project.  Here is my submission!

Lauren Bacall Sketch

It's a little late for a warm-up sketch, but I wanted to sketch a little anyway.  Lauren Bacall's image is something you can't forget- very sultry, very mysterious, and very strong.  She's worth studying- I need to put her on my list.  I just wish it didn't take her death for me to reacquaint myself with her movies.  And I wish people would just stop dying- at least for a few days...

RIP Robin Williams

I'm normally not affected much by celebrity deaths, even if its a celebrity I like.  But Robin Williams's sudden passing really shook me.  He is probably the first actor I ever became aware of as a child, and I always loved him.  That he is a comic genius has been said, and it is true, but there was also something so real and endearing about him.  No matter what he did or was movie he was in, his appeal never faded.  The idea that this man who brought so much laughter into the world could have been suffering so much is unbearable to me.  So I had to ruminate on him for a little bit today.  Here's to all the Happy Thoughts that Robin Williams gave to us all.

Louise Loves Art Book Trailer

Hooray!  Last month I worked on a really neat project: a trailer for a delightful children's book called "Louise Loves Art", by Kelly Light.  I really loved the style of the characters (they have a very animated appeal), and did my best to stick to the original inking and coloring techniques Kelly used in the book.  Reality checks kept me from doing full animation, but I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out.  (In case anyone is interested, I animated on paper first, then inked and colored in Photoshop, then composited in After Effects.)

"Louise Loves Art" was also featured in USA Today, and author Kelly Light has some wonderful things to say about the genesis of the story and characters and the important of art in children's' lives.  Its a marvelous book and it deserves to be a hit.  I'm so happy to have been a part of it!

Daily Crapbook: Frankie

This an assignment I've been looking forward to but unable to find time for, until now!  This isn't strictly on point, but I want to play around a bit before I really get my hands dirty.

GirlsDrawinGirls: Cowgirl

For the last couple weeks or so, I've been a bit of a recluse.  Haven't been feeling one hundred percent, and had a big job into which I needed to funnel any scraps of energy I could scavenge.  But I need to get back into drawing every day, a GDG is always good for a bit of inspiration.
